What is periodontal disease?

A serious gum infection that damages gums and can destroy the jawbone. Periodontal diseases are mainly the result of infections and inflammation of the gums and bone that surround and support the teeth. In its early stage, called gingivitis, the gums can become swollen and red, and they may bleed. In its more serious form, called periodontitis, the gums can pull away from the tooth, bone can be lost, and the teeth may loosen or even fall out.
Periodontal disease is mostly seen in adults. Periodontal disease and tooth decay are the two biggest threats to dental health.
Periodontitis is common but fairly preventable.
A recent CDC report1 provides the following data related to prevalence of periodontitis in the U.S.:
• 47.2% of adults aged 30 years and older have some form of periodontal disease.
• Periodontal disease increases with age, 70.1% of adults 65 years and older have periodontal disease.
This condition is more common in men than women (56.4% vs 38.4%), those living below the federal poverty level (65.4%), those with less than a high school education (66.9%), and current smokers (64.2%)
Causes
The cause is usually poor oral hygiene. Periodontitis can lead to tooth loss. Bacteria in the mouth infect tissue surrounding the tooth, causing inflammation around the tooth leading to periodontal disease. When bacteria stay on the teeth long enough, they form a film called plaque, which eventually hardens to tartar, also called calculus.
Tartar build-up can spread below the gum line, which makes the teeth harder to clean. Then, only a dental health professional can remove the tartar and stop the periodontal disease process.
Warning signs

prevent damage to surrounding bone. Advanced cases may require surgery. The following are warning signs of periodontal disease:
• Bad breath or bad taste that won’t go away

• Tender or bleeding gums
• Painful chewing
• Loose teeth
• Sensitive teeth
• Gums that have pulled away from your teeth
• Any change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite

• Fillings that have become defective
• Taking medications that cause dry mouth

Prevention and treatment
Treatment includes professionally cleaning the pockets around teeth to prevent damage to surrounding bone. Advanced cases may require surgery. Gingivitis can be controlled and treated with good oral hygiene and regular professional cleaning. More severe forms of periodontal disease can also be treated successfully but may require more extensive treatment. Such treatment might include deep cleaning of the tooth root surfaces below the gums, medications prescribed to take by mouth or placed directly under the gums, and sometimes corrective surgery.
To help prevent or control periodontal diseases, it is important to:
1. Brush and floss every day to remove the bacteria that cause gum disease.

the inflamed or infected pulp is removed and the inside of the tooth is carefully cleaned and disinfected, then filled and sealed with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha. Afterwards, the tooth is restored with a crown or filling for protection and will continue to function like any other tooth. Aligners

What are ALIGNERS?
ALIGNERS is a tooth-straightening system that uses a series of removable, clear plastic trays (called aligners) to gently guide teeth into the correct position. ALIGNERS is an alternative to metal or ceramic braces. ALIGNERS is used to address most alignment issues:
– including overbites,
-underbites
-crossbites
-gaps between teeth.
adult and teen versions are available so patients of nearly any age can enjoy the benefits of the ALIGNERS
What are the benefits of ALIGNERS?
ALIGNERS offers several benefits compared to traditional braces
1.-the trays are made of clear, smooth plastic,
2.-they’re virtually invisible while they are being worn.
3.-The ALIGNERS are very comfortable, with no sharp wires or brackets to rub and irritate the mouth.
4.-The ALIGNERS are removable for short periods of time to eat or to clean the teeth
It is recommended to wear the aligners for at least 22-23 hours a day.
What happens during aligners treatment?
Upon an initial examination, Dr Ana Rankovic will decide if aligners is right for you. Treatment begins with the dentist taking impressions of the teeth. The impressions are sent to a lab where a technician scans them into a computer. Special software scans the impressions and then creates a series of virtual 3-D models that reflect the movements the teeth need to make to come into their proper alignment. The aligners are then crafted based
on these models. Each aligner is worn for about two weeks before being changed to the next in the series.
Most patients can complete treatment in less than two years. Is aligners covered by insurance? Generally, no, although some plans provide partial coverage for orthodontic care. Our office can help patients determine their coverage limits and identify other sources of budget friendly financing. If you are interested in correcting the alignment of your teeth, make an appointment with Dr. Ana Rankovic to determine if aligners is the right treatment for you.
